When Adlai Stevenson (1900-1965), who represented the US (1961-1965),
challenged the Soviet Ambassador with photographic proof of the presence
of Soviet missiles in Cuba, Valerian Zorin (1902-1986) was adamant that
the documents were faked. Unable to break the deadlock, the Council adjourned
sine die. UN Secretary General U Thant, in
an attempt at direct mediation, flew to Havana on 30 October and tried,
in vain, to persuade Castro to let in UN inspectors.
